Join Gemma and the crew of Thames Discoverer for an exciting unique event celebrating the plants of the River Thames!

Enjoy an informative river foraging walk followed by a relaxing boat cruise, including a wild afternoon tea on board. Gemma will demonstrate how to identify seasonal edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, trees or fungi. Be inspired by the amazing flavours of wild edibles, take home new recipe ideas and a summary of the species list afterwards.

Forage Walk: uncover the hidden world of the plants, trees and fungi on your doorstep. Find out about ancient and modern uses for tasty and nutritious wild edibles. On our walk we will cover: Forager’s code- the essential safety, sustainability and legal rules to follow; Botany basics- introduction to identification; History and folklore behind our most common weeds; Introduction to a wide variety of seasonal plants, trees and fungi (seasonal species variations).

Thames Cruise: we will board our private barge Thames Discoverer for a relaxing cruise upstream on the freshwater non-tidal Thames, examining our foraged finds more closely, wildlife spotting and sightseeing from the boat- including cruising past the golden gates of Hampton Court Palace. Discoverer  is owned by local charity River Thames Boat Project who are also supported by this event.

Afternoon Tea: showcasing edible riverside plants, as we cruise along the river, Gemma will offer a variety of savory and sweet foods made with wild ingredients. Many of these plants we will have already met on our walk. There will also be wild herbal tea or ‘coffee’, as well as a wild alcoholic Cocktail or non-alcoholic mocktail. Please have a substantial lunch before the event starts at 1pm as we may not be having any food or drink until approximately 4pm.

The event will start and end at the same location in Ham/Teddington. Full location details after booking. Easily accessible by bike, train, bus or car.

Your Guide: Gemma is a passionate ethnobotanist, interested in the changing relationship between people and plants over time. She has studied and worked with wild plants for food, medicine, and traditional crafts for 20 years. She has led guided walks since 2010 and forage cooking workshops since 2016. She studied Botany with the BSBI, has certificates in food hygiene & catering, and both personal and professional experiences of food allergies and intolerance. She has worked with the River Thames Boat Project since 2013- prior role as Education Manager delivering river-based education and training programmes.

The Boat: Discoverer will be crewed by three highly experienced crew from the charity. The barge was designed specifically to make the Thames more accessible, including large removable windows and deck space for incredible views of the river, and is fully wheelchair accessible. She has a toilet, kitchen, tables and chairs, indoor covered viewing area and open front deck. She has solar panels for renewable energy and sustainable use of water and waste reduction is essential on board.

Accessibility: the boat is designed to be as accessible as possible for people with mobility issues or disabilities, including a wheelchair accessible toilet. However, the walk before the cruise may vary in terrain and accessibility. Please contact Gemma via email before booking to check if this course can be adapted/suitable for your needs.
